Deadlifts might be one of the most important movements you'll need to learn and keep doing for overall health and strength. They're also one of the most badly executed exercises, so learning to do them not only helps you get the most out of them but also protect the spine.

Here is a short clip of what I worked on with Emma during her deadlift session. Emma's goal is to get stronger and build muscles.

Training smart is not negotiatiable if your goal is to keep training well into your old age. Muscle mass and strength are useful, but this without being able to move pain-free and perform day to day activities, is of little use.

Being strong is every range of motion of a joint (mobility), being able to sustain movements for a set amount of time (cardiovascular fitness) and having strong stabilising muscles is not only essential for longevity but also enhances your strength training and prevents injury!!

This is how I coach my clients both in person and online.

Save and follow this upper body workout route!

A. Cambered Bar Incline Press 3 x 8

B. Chin-up 3 x 10-12

C. Dips 4 x 6

D. Bent Over Row 2 x 10

E. Incline Bench Y Raise 2 x failure

If you're using the cambered bar for the first time, start light to see how your shoulder mobility holds up.

These 2 cues changed my bench

1. Taking a dep breath and holding, allowing you to brace and maintain proper torso tension as your press. This gives you better stability, allowing for a strong and smooth press.

2. Pushing the upper back into the bench creates a stable and strong pressing base. Your upper back is what's directly underneath the bar, and therefore, the more stable that is, the better your pressing is!
